Feb 2 Owl Prowl - "Whooo is out there?" Owls have fascinated mankind for centuries, from the wise owl of the Greek goddess Athena to Winnie the Pooh’s friend. To learn more about these creatures of the night, join rangers from Ozark National Scenic Riverways on an Owl Prowl at 5:30 PM on Friday, February 2, beginning at the Alley Spring General Store. We’ll learn fact and folklore about these little understood hunters of the night. Using recorded owl calls, rangers will try to get the owls to answer and maybe even approach close enough for a good look! The walk will be less than a mile, but please come prepared because it may be chilly! Visitors can enjoy hot drinks at the General Store before and after this free program. The Alley General Store is on the grounds near Alley Spring, located six miles west of Eminence, Missouri, on State Route 106. Please dress warmly and make sure all children are accompanied by an adult. For more information, contact Ranger Josh Chilton at (573) 226-3945 or josh_chilton@nps.gov, or visit the park’s Facebook page or park website at www.nps.gov/ozar. Feb 23 Another Sky Event! Skywatch at the Bonebrake Center - Come to the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History on Friday, February 23, 2018 to experience views of the solar system and the galaxy. The event will run from 7:00 to about 8:30 p.m. The famous Dent County Astronomers will be on site using powerful telescopes, including the Bonebrake Center’s kid/adult-friendly telescopes, dubbed “Charles” and “Shirley,” to explore the early spring sky. As the twilight fades for our event, the Moon will tower high in the south. Along the line between sunlight and darkness on the Moon, we'll see some of the greatest lunar features -- mountains, craters, and faults. The craters Plato, Eratosthenes, Tycho, and Clavius will enjoy lunar sunrise. We can watch how their features change during our viewing event. We'll also have great chance to explore the winter constellations -- Gemini (the twins), Auriga (the charioteer), Canis Major (the big dog), and the very famous Orion (the hunter). We'll view the beautiful cluster of stars known at the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. We'll look at the Orion Nebula to see a star nursery with fledgling stars. And you'll get magnified views of stars like Castor, Sirius, Almach, and Betelgeuse to see what distinguishes these stars. Maybe we'll see a passing satellite or a speeding meteor, too. There will be telescopes, and lasers to help your eyes explore the night sky. All you need to bring is your imagination (and warm gloves). We'll provide you with free astronomy information so you can continue to enjoy our nights sky after you go home. Our events welcome all ages, and young visitors can have a turn at aiming the Kid Powered Telescope provided by the Bonebrake Center. To enjoy the night sky, we need clear sky and safe footing. So we'll monitor the weather as the event approaches, so be sure to check for cancellation due to unusable or unsafe conditions. Skywatches are always fun, with handouts, answers to questions, and sometimes a surprise or two! Dress for the weather, and come enjoy the views and experience a tour of the sky. This program is appropriate for the whole family and will be mostly outdoors. There will be access to the house and light snacks. The suggested donation is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for the whole family, but no one will be turned away. Registration is not required, but feel free to leave a message at the Bonebrake Center (573.729.3400) or e-mail at bonebrakecenter@embarqmail.com for more information. If it appears the night sky will be too cloudy, the program will be postponed. Registrants may call or text 573-247-0279 on the afternoon of Friday, February 23 if there is a question about possible cancellation. 7:00-8:30 pmBonebrake Center of Nature and History247-0279
