Nov 5 Skywatchers! - The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present another “Skywatch" on Saturday, November 5, 2016 starting about 6:00 p.m. led by very experienced volunteers. These folks have done several highly successful sky watches at the Bonebrake Center and are knowledgeable amateur astronomers. Two of the most interesting things to see will be on ground -- the new kid (and adult) friendly telescopes for use by visitors. Experienced volunteers will be on site to teach people (and youngsters) how to aim and focus these powerful telescopes. In the sky, Venus will be low in the west. Saturn and its rings be visible (over ONE BILLION miles away!). There will be a crescent moon, and the border between the sunlit and shadowed moon will highlight details in the large craters. Visitors will even be able to see the area of the Moon where the first 1969 moon landing took place! Not far from the Moon is Mars at over 100 million miles away--it will look small, even in the telescopes. Some of the most distant planets may be visible later in the evening. There will be many stars and constellations, too. The summer constellations, like Cygnus the Swan and Aquila the Eagle, are fading toward the west, but there will be the fall constellations of Andromeda, Pegasus, and Cassiopeia. Visitors will be able to view the Andromeda galaxy using telescopes, binoculars and lasers, and there should be some interesting double stars and star clusters, as well as some stars that are starting to fall apart. Visitors are welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars or just come and view through the many telescopes available at the event. The main requirement is to bring is a curiosity about the universe. The event will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. The viewing event depends on good weather and clear skies. If there is cloudy weather, the event will be rescheduled. Interested parties may call 573-247-0279 on the afternoon of Saturday, November 5 to make sure the skies are going to cooperate! There will be access to the house and light refreshments. There is no cost but donations are genuinely appreciated! Phone reservations are requested but not required. Please call the Bonebrake Center at 573-729-3400 or e-mail at bonebrakecenter@embarqmail.com and leave a message for more information or to register. The Bonebrake Center is located at 601 North Hickory Street in Salem, at the corner of North Hickory Street and East Rolla Road, two blocks northeast of the Dent County Courthouse. 6:00 PMBonebrake Center of Nature and History- 601 N Hickory St.729-3400
