May 1 Skywatch - Come to the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. to experience exciting views of the solar system and the galaxy. It will be a celestial BONANZA with many constellations, star clusters, double stars, and far away galaxies visible, as well as the Moon and Jupiter! Joe Shuster and friends will be on site using powerful telescopes, including the Bonebrake Center’s kid/adult-friendly telescopes, dubbed “Charles” and “Shirley,” to explore the spring sky. The event will start at 7:30 p.m. when there is still a bit of light so the presenters can explain the telescopes and allow kids to operate them to view the planet Earth. As the sky starts to darken, the focus will be on the Moon, high in the sky. The craters on the Moon will be visible, and participants will be able to see the area where astronauts first landed on the Moon in 1969. Eventually, the brighter stars will show up. Slipping toward the horizon will be the winter constellations, Canis Major and Orion, the Hunter, and overhead will be Auriga, the Charioteer, and Gemini, the Twins. There will be star maps for the visitors to find Leo, the Lion, and the Bears, Big and Little. Participants can take the star maps home with them so they can view the sky throughout the month, identifying what they can see. The telescopes will let visitors see several clusters of stars in the sky as well as some interesting doubles stars, too. Finally, toward the end of the event, the biggest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, and four of its moons, will be visible. Skywatches are always fun, with handouts, answers to questions, and sometimes a surprise or two! All are welcome to bring personal binoculars or telescopes as well. This program is appropriate for the whole family and will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. There will be access to the house and light snacks. The suggested donation is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for the whole family, but no one will be turned away. Registration is not required, but feel free to leave a message at the Bonebrake Center (573.729.3400) or e-mail at for more information. If it appears the night sky will be too cloudy, the program will be rescheduled, if possible. Registrants may call or text 573-247-0279 on the afternoon of Monday, May 1 if there is a question about possible cancellation. 7:30 pmBonebrake Center of Nature and History247-0279
