The City of Salem owns and operates its electric distribution system and water/sewer system. The city does not generate electricity, but contracts with Show-Me Power Corp for base and peak load power.

The city has five deep wells for water supply. Other than chlorine injection, there is not treatment of the water. The water in Salem is tested in accordance with the Clean Drinking Water Act.

Internet access is readily available in and around Salem including: Dial-up Internet service, Broadband Cable Internet access, Broadband Satellite Internet access, Broadband Wireless Internet access.
