This was the home of George Washington Peck and his wife Elizah Callie Peck.  George went to school in Dent County and in 1880 he started to work at Dr. L. B. Craig’s Drug Store in Salem.  In February 22, 1883 he married Elizah Callie Blackwell.  They had two sons, Leroy B. and Ralph Edward.  “Wash” as he was known, served two terms as the clerk of the County Court, City Alderman and he was also elected Mayor in 1901.  He was also in business with G.W. and N.D. Hobson in the Hobson Brothers Hardware and Furniture Store.  In 1905, he helped organize the First National Bank and served as the bank’s president.  Later, he and his sons operated the Peck Hardware Store.  He retired from this business in 1932.  Six years later he passed away (1938) at this residence.
