Each year, Salem is host to a tremendous number of canoeing and camping enthusiasts who come to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways for unparalleled natural beauty, wildlife, crystal-clear waters, gentle currents, deep, tranquil pools, excellent trout fishing, and warm hospitality. Many of our floating guests spend the day on the river, then spend their evenings enjoying the creature comforts of Salem’s restaurants, lodging, parks, and recreational opportunities. After a day of paddling, fishing, or simply soaking up the sun, you might spend and evening enjoying a concert, eating a delicious meal, or attending one of the many events and festivals that occur throughout the year in Salem, such as a rodeo, horse show, carnival, fireworks display, community theatre, craft fair, art show, auto club cruise-in, or cultural event. When the evening winds down you can rest up in one of our comfortable motels or full service hotel.

If supplies or groceries are needed, Salem is the natural choice for stocking up on food, ice, and fishing and camping gear before heading to the rivers. And of course, you can “rough it” at any of several private or state-run campgrounds. Choose from tent camping, trailer sites, or cabins, according to your tastes and budget.

Montauk State Park, located in southern Dent County, offers excellent trout fishing and recreational opportunities. Hiking and bicycle trails, nature walks, picnic areas, trophy trout fishing, and the trout hatchery provide visitors with many fun things to see and do. Camping facilities range from rustic to electricity-equipped sites, and can accommodate single tents, large pull-behind campers or RVs. The park offers rental cabins with kitchens, and a motel with modern conveniences. The Montauk Lodge Restaurant offers a varied menu including a selection of wines, buffet or menu style meals. The casual yet attractive atmosphere allows restaurant patrons to feel at ease, whether dressed up “fancy” or dressed down “campy”.
