L.N. Coffman was born in St. James in 1870.  He moved to Salem in 1895.  He founded the L.N. Coffman Company in 1914.  He was also one of the founders of the Roberts and Judson Lumber Company with M.F. Roberts and W.R. Judson.  Mr. Coffman served as the President of the Bank of Salem.  He also helped found the first Salem Chamber of Commerce.  He served as Mayor of Salem, School Board member and also was a member of the Board of Aldermen.  In 1898, he married Jessie Louise Judson.  Mrs. Coffman was educated at Hardin College at Mexico, Missouri and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution.  L.N. and Jessie Coffman had three children: Max J., Lucille Rosemary (who died in infancy) and James L. Coffman.
