Current home of PRATT MITCHELL & COMPANY, CPA – BLOCK 22
The original building was a log house used as a hospital during the Civil War. Rooms were added later and a livery stable on the south end of the block, which was run by George Pendergrass. T.B. Pence bought if from Mr. Pendergrass, (Pence’s father-in-law) and built a 3 story hotel around the log house. Lodging at the hotel was 50¢ a night in the beginning. Later the cost was $2.00 a day, $10.00 per week or $30.00 per month. Mrs. T. M. Thomure was the proprietress. The hotel was sold to a Salem bank and later to Jim Butler. Ken and Olive Preston purchased the property next and tore down the hotel. They had a building built to house the Lyric Movie Theater. In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Riley Smith owned and operated the Western Auto store in this location.
