502 N. Hickory Street
This house was occupied by J. L. “Fate” Smith and his wife Viola (McGarvey) Smith. Fate served one term as sheriff for Dent County in the 1880’s. Viola was a local school teacher. She died at an early age. Fate was grief stricken over her death and never remarried. Fate’s mother and sister moved into the house to help him raise his young daughter, Virginia. Fate ran a store at 101 W. Fourth Street with the aid of his sister Molly. Later on Virginia and her husband, Arch Redwine, ran this store and it was known as the Smith and Redwine Store. This store is now occupied by Lucky Me (2010).
